Living with depression can feel isolating, but you are not alone. The stigma that surrounds mental health has made it hard for people to admit to themselves and others that they’re struggling. First, recognize that you don't need to explain your depression to everyone, however healthy outlets such as counseling will assist in navigating those emotions.

Here are a few tips you can implement in your routine to better manage depressive disorder:

Practice self-care

Mental illness will naturally ingrain itself into your daily routines, it is vital to cultivate skills and self-awareness that can be used to cope with depression in your daily surroundings. Whether that be journaling, picking back up your favorite instrument or connecting with close friends.

Taking inventory

Mental illness doesn’t affect solely the mind, it has physical impacts too. Are you noticing a decrease in energy? How are your physical symptoms aligning with you emotionally? Practicing an inventory of your body can alert you to what is happening mentally.

Regular exercise

It is completely natural to battle with the motivation to be active. There are hormones like dopamine and endorphins that are released during exercise that improve the moods of individuals with mild depression.

Start simple. Go for a 30-minute walk, 3 or 4 times a week, and journal the difference in your mood.
